PCOS AND HEALTH COMPLICATIONS

If you have been diagnosed with PCOS, you need to take special care for yourself. PCOS is a metabolic condition and can hamper your daily life if not taken care of. But – how does this affect your quality of life?

In our last blog we had discussed how PCOD was named PCOS later through researches carried out in past and how and why is it called so. We also saw that many women remain undiagnosed as the symptoms are not common in all of the patients. It usually comes up into picture when  certain health issues are faced over time.

Untreated or unmanaged PCOS can lead to various health complications such as,

Diabetes,

Infertility,

Heart attacks

Endometrial cancer.

Through research it has been documented that following causes could be the reason for PCOS that affect your life.

Genetic predisposition: your family may play an important role to inherit the risk to develop PCOS. It is always not only PCOS that can pass on to generations, metabolic abnormalities in itself can put you at risk as well.

Weight fluctuations and insulin resistance.: Gone are the days when insulin resistance used to be found in most of obese women, insulin resistance in thin or normal weight patients is not uncommon now. Such type of recurrent high insulin resistance develops sensitivity in ovaries hence causing aromatization leading to high amount of androgens in body. This affects ovulation and hence causing PCOS to develop.

Such anovulation thus disrupts other hormones causing irregular or absent periods. Raised androgens cause acne and excess sebum production over face along with unwanted facial hair growth, hair thinning over scalp, raised sugar levels in blood causes either weight loss or stubborn weight gain and several other serious health conditions.

One of the PCOS side effect, especially untreated insulin resistance, can lead to type 2 diabetes. Also if you are planning to start a family, it is important to first manage your insulin resistance to prevent pregnancy complications.

Hormonal imbalance and health complications

When you are a woman with PCOS, adequate care and support is a must because the risk to your body is not limited to your reproductive system. You might be more at risk of heart problems or diabetes if your PCOS is not diagnosed and managed early on in your life. A good lifestyle and better choices in health can help you overcome almost all symptoms of PCOS.

These are not the only symptoms you will experience if you have PCOS, the hormones which are imbalance because of this condition will eventually show off other dreadful symptoms and sign in your body. It drastically changes your psychology, reproductive health and metabolism to large extent.
